Court releases jailed maid abuser for ‘health reasons’

Malaysian woman who was jailed for attacking her domestic worker and leaving her seriously injured in a case that caused outrage around the region, has been released from jail “for health reasons.”

On December 21 last year, Rozita Mohamad Ali, 44, who uses the honorific Datin, attacked her domestic worker Suyanti Sutrinso at a house in Mutiara Damansara. Ali used a kitchen knife, clothes hanger, steel mop and umbrella in the attack, Free Malaysia Today reported.

The maid was left in a life-threatening condition with multiple injuries to her eyes, both legs, hands and internal organs after the attack.

On March 15 in Petaling Jaya’s Sessions Court, Ali was charged with attempted murder, which she pleaded not guilty to. However, Ali pleaded guilty after the court downgraded her charges to causing serious harm. She was sentenced to a bind-over order for five years with a surety of 20,000 ringgits (US$5,030).

However, this sparked public outrage, with an online petition against the sentence attracting more than 70,000 signatures.

On March 29, the High Court in Shah Alam revised Ali’s punishment to an eight-year jail sentence effective immediately.

However, after serving about two months in jail, the Court of Appeal suspended Ali’s sentence due to “exceptional circumstances” on Wednesday. Ali was released on bail of 25,000 ringgit (US$6,287) with two sureties.

The court said that the exceptional circumstances were health-related, saying she had neck and back pain which was reason enough to be out of jail.
